READ@PolyU: Recommend Common Book for 2014 and Win a Prize!

READ@PolyU is a campus-wide common reading programme designed to help foster a reading culture across the University. A free copy of the common book will be distributed to all PolyU full-time first-year undergraduate students. To create a sense of community for freshman, a series of activities such as discussion sessions, book talks and an essay contest will also be organized to enhance the reading experience.

All PolyU staff and students are now invited to make suggestions for the common book in 2014. The Programme Committee will review each submission prior to making a final selection. 

To encourage participation, 50 copies of the selected common book will be given out in a lucky draw. PolyU students and staff who have submitted a book title will be automatically enrolled into the lucky draw. Winners will be notified by email in May.

Below please find the criteria for the selection of the common book which guide the Programme Committee in making their choice, as well as several sample titles recommended by PolyU staff and students in 2013.

Please submit your favourite book titles with author to lbele@polyu.edu.hk by 28 February 2014 (Friday). There is no limit to the number of book titles you can submit.

READ@PolyU 2014: Recommendation on the common book:

A.  Criteria for common book selection

  • The book will be in English
  • It should be engaging for the PolyU community (both Faculty and students)
  • It should be accessible, not difficult to read
  • It should appeal to students’ imagination, and should include some elements of exploration of and reflection on multi-cultural issues
  • It should preferably have been adapted for film
  • It should preferably have won international and critical acclaim
  • Ideally, the author would be available to visit PolyU

     

B.  Sample titles suggested by staff and students in 2013:

  • Animal farm / George Orwell
  • Ender’s game / Orson Scott Card
  • The boy in the striped pyjamas / John Boyne

Repainting work at G/F, 1/F & 4-5/F (6 Jan – 8 Jan)

Please note that the Library also operates a 24-hour Study Centre (Rm. L001) on the G/F. The Centre is accessible via the Core E entrance after Library closes, and users are required to present their valid PolyU staff / student ID cards to the security guard before entering.

Date Due Reminder for Returning Term Loans

This message is a gentle reminder to all academic, administrative equivalent staff and postgraduate students that all library books on loan to them are due on 6 January 2014. To avoid a last minute rush, please return books before the last day. Overdue books returned after 6 January 2014 will be subject to a fine of $2.00 (1 - 6 days) and $3.00 (7 - 42 days) per book per calendar day.

Books borrowed or renewed on or after 9 December 2013 will be due for return on 19 May 2014.

A loan may be recalled once the item has been on loan to you for four weeks if required by another user. Recall notices will be emailed to you. Please remember to check your PolyU email account –

Library Special Arrangements during Revision & Examination period (30 Nov – 24 Dec 2013)

During the Revision and Examination period, the following measures will be taken:

1. Reading areas in the Library will be patrolled at intervals and unattended belongings will be removed. Please be considerate, and vacate your seat once you have finished.

2. In addition to the 24-hour Study Centre in Room L001, the Quiet Study Room in L003 on G/F which provides over 320 seats will also be opened 24 hours during the period. Please access via the Core E entrance after Library closes.

3. Silence must be observed in the Library. Noisy users may be asked to leave the Library.

4. For the REC Research Carrels, the booking sessions will be increased to five per day. Eligible users can reserve a session one day in advance via PolyU iBooking System.

 

 

Fire Alarm Bell Test on 12 Nov 2013

Limited Access Arrangement for JULAC Student Card Holders during Exam Period (9-23 Dec)

Due to very high demand for study space during revision and examination period, the Library will implement Limited Access Arrangement for JULAC Student Borrower/Reader Card Holders from 9-23 Dec 2013.

During this period, access to the PolyU Library by students of other UGC institutions will be limited to non-peak hours (6:01-11:00pm) of the day only. Normal access will resume after the examination period. We apologize for any inconvenience that may cause.
