The Author's Talk: "The Importance of Peer Review - Supporting our Editors, Authors and Reviewers" was held on 19 October 2012 in the Library.
The talk was well received and attracted more than 30 PolyU academic and research staff members as well as postgraduate students. During the session, Ms Lyndsey Dixon (Publisher at Taylor & Francis Asia Pacific) shared with the PolyU community the importance of the peer-review process. In addition, Professor Haiyan Song, Associate Dean (Research) and Chair Professor of School of Hotel & Tourism Management (SHTM) and Dr Agachai Sumalee, Associate Professor, Dept of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE), shared their tips on getting published and answered questions from participants.
"The workshop on information search skills and RefWorks was highly informative and very effectively conducted. Prior to attending the workshop, students were largely unaware of how they could obtain the academic articles required for their assignments. They are much better equipped now and their selection of articles for their second assignment reflects their acquisition of this new skill set. The workshop also helped them understand RefWorks and learn how to compile a reference list. Such workshops should be scheduled very early in the semester and be included as a mandatory activity in all writing courses in order to benefit students."

"The Library organized a few workshops on how to cite work and prepare a reference list in APA style using RefWorks for a few classes of Advanced English for University Studies (AEUS) students during the first semester of 2012-2013. The workshops also covered a few special tricks and practical search skills that the students need to know on how to quickly and effectively locate books and journal articles.
In AEUS, the students are required to write a discursive essay where they critique different views held by academics. Hence, it is imperative that they are able locate and critically analyze a range of academic sources efficiently. This is a skill that students have to develop and the workshop contributed significantly to one of the objectives of the course.
The students and I were impressed by the quality and the effectiveness of the workshop. After the workshop, students were able to locate better sources, cite them correctly and the quality of their final essay was substantially better. I believe that all students should take a library workshop during their freshman year. The techniques that students are taught are immensely valuable to them as university students and they will be asked to call on these skills throughout their university studies."
