    We are delighted to share with you the outcomes of the successful pilot of READ@PolyU, the campus wide common reading programme. READ@PolyU is the first programme of its kind in Hong Kong, attracting wide media coverage. The idea behind the programme is to advocate a reading culture across the campus so as to engage new students in reading.

    We would like to thank the Honourable Marjorie Yang, our Council Chair for her video message supporting READ@PolyU, which was disseminated via the READ@PolyU webpage.

    We would also like to thank staff and student facilitators including Council members, Mr. Chan Tze-ching, JP, Dr. Ng Tat Lun, JP,   Professor Kenneth Pang Tsan-wing, SBS, Dr. Virginia Cheng, Professor Walter Yuen, the Vice-President (Academic Development), Mr Gerrit Bahlman, Director of Information Technology,   Dr. Virginia Mack, English Professor from the United States, and Steve O’Connor, the then University Librarian.  Students have been impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of the facilitators from faculties and administrative units campus-wide, whose inspiring and thought-provoking discussion sessions prove valuable in guiding students in their discovery.

    During the book distribution period in Sept 2011, over 1,250 first year undergraduate students came to the Library to collect the free copies of the common book, The Kite Runner.   During the same period, over 1,220 students (1,395 students as of January 2011) came to “Like” the Facebook Fanpage at the distribution counter.


    In conjunction with the launch of the programme, the Library presented an exhibition of photos of Afghanistan by Mr. Luke Powell, a famous American photographer. Mr. Powell generously offered 188 pieces of his works taken between the 1970s and 2000s which were on display from August to October 2011.  Also, three sessions of the “The Kite Runner” film shows, which were co-organized by the PolyU International Film Society and the Library , were held in the Chiang Chen Studio Theatre in Nov 2011.  Professor Reza Hoshmand of the Hong Kong Baptist University gave a talk on the “Kite Runner” which generated lots of interest.


    All PolyU full-time first year undergraduate students were invited to participate in the READ@PolyU Contest to submit an essay on issues relating to the Book.  Prizes including an iPad 2 presented to the champion, and 5 awards of appreciation; were given to the best essays. The winning essays were posted on the READ@PolyU webpage. The winners were:

    It is encouraging to witness the successful pilot of READ@PolyU, a pioneering initiative for the University and its Library.  For the forthcoming READ@PolyU 2012/13, the READ@PolyU Committee is now in the process of selecting books and will try their best to sustain the momentum which has been generated campus wide, on the advocacy of a reading culture across the University.

  • Library Survey 2011 - Lucky Draw Winner of iPad2

    • The Library Survey (LibQual Survey 2011) has been completed successfully.  A big thank you to the 3,439 staff and students who completed the survey, and congratulation to one of our participants, Ms Liu Kun, who has won the lucky draw.  Ms Liu, a PhD student from the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, received an iPad2 from the University Librarian, Mr Steve O'Connor, on 14 December 2011.

    The Library is now analyzing the data and the 1,481 comments received, to better understand your opinions on our service quality and identify areas for improvement.  We will keep you updated on its developments.

  • PolyUEngage: Creative Video Project for Engaging Diversity at PolyU

    •

    PolyUEngage aims to broaden students’ cultural perspectives and encourage multicultural interactions by incorporating international and local students in a creative video project with the use of extensive Library resources.  With the support from the International Affairs Office and the School of Design, this project is part of the programme of events to mark the Pao Yue-kong Library’s 40th Anniversary in 2012.

    All PolyU students including international, Mainland and local students are invited to form teams to participate in the project.  Selected Teams will be allocated a project budget of maximum HK$2,000 per student for production cost as well as full sponsorship for the Video Production Course taught by a Hong Kong-based prolific film director - Mr Godfrey Ho.  Students can also have priority access to a purpose-designed Library Multimedia Lab (LML).   • iBooking (Library Facilities Booking System)

    Bookable facilities bearing an iBooking tag for easy recognition

    • iBooking System, the online booking system for Library facilities has been established to allow library users to place online reservation for library facilities such as Research Carrels and PCs in Research Enhancement Centre and Media Services (3/F).

  • Services for Student with Special Needs

    •

    The Library cares about users with disabilities or special needs and committed to becoming accessible for all eligible users. Special services and facilities include:

    Service priority counter
    Special entrance and exit gate
    Special trolleys
    Special express terminals
    Designated seats
    Designated research carrels at Research Enhancement Centre, 3/F

    In addition, a dedicated room equipped with specific hardware and software is located on the G/F of the Library (Room L013).   Users with special needs can register at the service counter of SAO (ST314) for using the room and facilities.  After registration, students can access the room by simply placing their student I.D. card on the smart card reader located at the entrance.  Advance booking for Room L013 can also be made via the SAO online booking system or calling SAO counter staff at 2766 6800.

    ENERGY NEXUS: Wearable Art (22 Dec 2011 - 18 Jan 2012)


    Presented by the 8th International Shibori Symposium,  ENERGY NEXUS: Wearable Art (22 Dec 2011 - 18 Jan 2012) is an invitational exhibition of works by international professional designers and professors, who transform fibers and other materials into wearable art.  The range of 'wearable' art runs from the functional to the conceptual, combining creative expression with material manipulation, and technology. This exhibition celebrates the interplay between new explorations and traditional textile techniques;  the silhouettes and the surface textures; and the communication of the artists' views on history, society, and beauty.

    The PolyU Fashion Show 2011 (ITC) (5 - 24 November 2011)

    The PolyU Fashion Show 2011, showcased by concurrent exhibitions at the Exhibition Hall of the Library and the Fashion Gallery of ITC, was successfully held from 5 to 24 November 2011.   The exhibition held in the Library displayed the creative work of twenty-four graduating students selected from the BA(Hons) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles and HD Scheme in Fashion and Textiles Studies.
