Interim Free E-Resources
More interim free e-resources are now available for study and research!  These e-resources are provided by a number of publishers/content providers for free in an interim period to support students, faculties and researchers for their online learning, teaching and research activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.  To highlight a few, Springer Nature, MIT, Cambridge University Press have opened up free access to their e-textbook collections.

Access to i-Space Equipment and Bloomberg Workstations by Appointment

PolyU staff and students can access and make use of the following i-Space facilities and equipment by making an appointment at the Library iBooking System.

Bloomberg Workstations

Eligible users can book a Bloomberg workstation located at 4/F i-space using the Library iBooking System.

One Button Studio

One Button Studio is a self-service facility for staff and students to prepare and create online teaching materials, video recordings, rehearse or practice for presentation. No special knowledge or expertise is required to operate the audio/video recording equipment, and digital content can be easily produced with just a few steps!

Equipment in Digital Makerspace 

You can also use the Library iBooking System to book the following equipment available in i-Space to facilitate the preparation of teaching materials:

  • Laser Cutting
  • Vinyl Cutting
  • Large-Format / Poster Printing
  • 3D Printing
  • 3D Scanner
  • Book Scanner
  • VR Experience Zone - offering HTC Vive Head Mounted Display (HDM) and Unity software

As a precautionary measure, the Library requires all users to wear masks whenever they are in the Library.  Anti-bacterial wet-wipes, alcohol gels and disposable VR face masks will be provided at One Button Studio and VR Experience Zone.

PolyU Open Educational Resources (OER) Portal features quality OER selected from around the world, which are indexed and classified into eight disciplines to mirror the eight faculties/schools of the PolyU.  In the Portal, you can discover or even share open-licensed teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain, enriching and enhancing teaching and learning.    

A good news is that we have collected links of resources, cultural events, and online exhibitions around the world for you to enjoy and learn at the same time during COVID-19 pandemic!

Launching of Digital Collections Portal

The Library is pleased to launch the new Digital Collections Portal with the purposes to preserve scholarly and intellectual work from the Library’s special collections, and to make the full-text openly accessible by faculty members, students and general public to support research and learning. The Portal contains digital contents of rare books, lyric manuscripts, oral history interviews and digital humanity projects. Here are the collection highlights:

  1. Rare Books on China and East Asia
    Rare Books on China and East Asia

    The Library has been digitizing the rare books of its Special Collections. To give users a glimpse of the Chinese and East Asian cultures and histories in western eyes between 18th and early 20th century, this collection contains the rare books on China and East Asia which were mainly published in western countries between 1704 and 1922. Users can also browse different topics by its sub-collections including Chinese Literature, Missionary, Religions in China, Social Life and Customs in China, Statistics of China Commerce, Travel in China, etc.

  2. Cheng Kok-kong’s Lyric Manuscripts & Oral History Interviews

    Cheng Kok-kong, Cantopop lyricist, was Artist-in-Residence 2017/18 of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Mr Cheng has been writing more than 2,000 Cantopop songs. Many of his songs still enjoy immense popularity to this day. These digital contents contain around 100 lyric manuscripts and his oral history interview records, which help users to know more stories behind the lyric manuscripts.

Library Closed from 23 Mar while Physical Resources Retrieval Service Continues

As there is a resurgence of coronavirus infections in the community, our physical Library, including the 24-Hour Study Centre, will be closed until further notice. During this period, PolyU staff and students who require access to print books and physical AV resources of the Library can request for their retrieval using the Physical Resources Retrieval Service. After receiving the pick-up notice via email, please pick up and borrow the requested items by self-checkout stations at the Reserve Collection area, Podium Floor of the Library from 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm on Monday to Friday. PolyU staff and students can continue to access all Library’s online resources anywhere 24/7, including e-books, e-journals, databases, etc. via the Library homepage.

Additional Library Support for Online Learning and Teaching 

To ensure that staff & students continue to have access to our collection, during this period, the Library will acquire for institutional access, an e-version of a book, where available,  even when a print copy is available in the Library. Staff and students can submit their recommendations here for acquisitions of specific book titles.  

  • Self-paced Library Online Courses on Learn@PolyU

Two online courses has been launched on so that students and staff can learn about Library Resources and tools in their own pace:

Research Consultations with Faculty Librarians will continue during the period.  Consultations can be done over the phone or even via Skype. Staff and students can make an appointment with your Faculty Librarian using the Research Consultation Appointment Form.

  • HKALL and Interlibrary Loan Services

HKALL and Interlibrary Loan Service will be temporarily suspended.

  • Interim Expanded Access to e-Resources for Online Learning and Teaching

To support students, faculties and researchers for their online learning, teaching and research activities during this period, a growing number of publishers/content providers are offering interim expanded access to part or all of their e-resources. The Library has consolidated a list of these resources  and will keep updating the information from time to time.

  • Return of Library Items and Waiving of Fines  
  • If needed, users can choose to return their borrowed items at a later date. Items returned within one week after face-to-face classes resume on campus will have their overdue fines waived. This applies to library materials with due dates previously extended up to 20 Jan 2020, or due on or after 29 Jan 2020. Please ignore the overdue notice automatically generated during this period.
  • Users may return Library items via the Library's 24-hour Book Drop located outside the campus turnstiles on the Podium Level near public footbridge towards Exit A Hung Hom MTR Station.
