Publishing Seminar - Getting Published in Medical Journals (by BMJ)

This seminar aims to help our students and faculty, especially those in nursing and allied health, to enhance their ability in academic writing and getting published in medical and related cross-disciplinary areas. Students and staff who are interested to learn the publishing tips in these fields are welcome to join. The talk will cover but is not limited to the following topics:

  • choosing the right journal
  • ensure that your research is worth publishing
  • use key international guidelines on reporting research
  • make best use of IMRaD format to write up studies
  • fully report methods and results to aid reproducibility
  • interpret results cautiously
  • write study abstracts and titles effectively and accurately
  • learn from rejection

About the Speaker

Trish Groves (MBBS, MRCPsych) is currently an associate editor for The BMJ and is on the advisory board of BMJ Open Science. Between joining The BMJ as its first editorial registrar (intern) in 1989 and leaving in 2018, she was a deputy editor and head of research on The BMJ, editor in chief of BMJ Open, director of academic outreach for BMJ, and editorial lead for e-learning programme BMJ Research to Publication.

Trish studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, then specialised in psychiatry, gaining MRCPsych in 1989. She was briefly an honorary research fellow at the School for Public Policy, UCL.

The Library is organising a series of talks and workshops for you to think up ideas, learn VR techniques, and 3D modelling tools so that you can create your story in VR! This series is supported by the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE).

Award Ceremony of Virtual Reality Contest 2017/18: Stories from Ancient China

“Virtual Reality Contest: Stories from ancient China” was the very first VR contest organized by the Pao Yue-Kong Library and Department of Electronic and Information Engineering. A series of cultural talks and workshops equipped the students with skills to embark on VR creation. Through the competition, the students fostered deep learning about VR technology, further appreciation of stories from ancient China and also learnt to work closely with team members from different faculties.

The award ceremony was held on 18 July 2018 in the Digital Visualisation Room (i-Space, 4/F). 17 groups participated in the contest which ended in June 2018. A total of 6 teams won prizes in the contest. Congratulations to our winners!
