* The area will be fenced off. Magazines and Newspapers will be relocated near the entrance of AV & Reserve Collection. The standing PCs will be suspended. Two guests PCs will be relocated to AV & Reserve Collection area.

Disturbance will be minimized but noise is unavoidable. Please proceed to other floors for quiet study during the works period if needed.

READ@PolyU: Suggest the 2025 Common Book and Win a Prize!

READ@PolyU is the community programme aimed at fostering a vibrant reading culture on campus. Each year, we distribute print copies of the common book to students and organize engaging activities to enhance their reading experience.

Which book do you think the entire PolyU community should read together next year? Please send your favourite book titles along with the author to lbread@polyu.edu.hk by 31 December 2024 (Tuesday). There’s no limit to the number of titles you can submit.

All PolyU students and staff who submit nominations will be automatically entered into a lucky draw. The winners will receive a small gift as a token of appreciation.

The Programme Committee will review all nominations before making the final selection.

What we look for in a common book:

  • The book will be in English, preferably less than 300 pages
  • It should be engaging for the PolyU community
  • It should be accessible, not difficult to read
  • It should appeal to students’ imagination, and should include some elements of exploration and reflection on multi-cultural issues
  • It should preferably have been adapted for film
  • It should preferably have an electronic version
  • It should preferably have won international and critical acclaim
  • Ideally, the author would be available to visit PolyU

Sample titles suggested by staff and students:

  • Klara and the Sun / Kazuo Ishiguro
  • The Midnight Library / Matt Haig
  • The Sun is also a Star / Nicola Yoon

By integrating this cutting-edge tool, our Library is committed to empowering users to leverage the latest technologies in their research and learning processes.

The key features include:

  1. Quick answers from credible sources:
    The tool utilizes extensive scholarly resources to pinpoint the 5 most relevant sources and access their metadata/abstracts to generate the answer. You can easily verify the sources from OneSearch.
     
  2. AI-enhanced search query: What if 5 sources aren’t sufficient? Click the “View More Results” button to locate additional items in OneSearch. You will be surprised to see how AI reinterprets your question and generates a search query with keywords you might have never thought of.
     
  3. New directions for research: Check out the “Related research questions” to uncover new topics that might broaden your perspective or deepen your analysis.
     
  4. Multilingual support: Ask questions in your native language, such as Chinese. The tool comes with translation capabilities to search for materials in both English and the input language, and generate answers in that same language too.
     
  5. Research history: Review your previous questions and answers to ensure you won’t lose track in your research journey.

1. 中國學術期刊數據庫 (China Online Journals): 涵蓋中文期刊約8500餘種,涉及自然科學、工程技術、醫藥衛生、農業科學、哲學政法、社會科學、科教文藝等各個學科。

2. 中國學位論文全文數據庫 (Chinese Dissertations Database): 收錄始於1980年,涵蓋基礎科學、理學、工業技術、人文科學、社會科學、醫藥衛生、農業科學、交通運輸、
    航空航天和環境科學等各學科領域。
3. 中國學術會議文獻數據庫 (China Conference Proceedings Database): 是國內唯一的學術會議文獻全文數據庫,收錄國家級學會、協會、研究會組織召開的全國性學術
    會議論文。數據範圍覆蓋自然科學,工程技術,農林,醫學等所有領域。
4. 中外專利數據庫 (Wanfang Patent Database): 收錄始於1985年,共收錄4700萬餘條專利全文,包含發明專利、外觀設計和實用新型三種類型。
5. 中外標準數據庫 (China Standards Database)*: 收錄了所有中國國家標準(GB)、中國行業標準(HB)、以及中外標準題錄摘要數據,共計333萬條記錄。

Publishing Strategies for the Open Access Era: Collaboration with Springer Nature

Join this upcoming seminar to discover how you can publish your work in Springer Nature’s Open Access Journal without paying the Article Processing Charges (APCs)!

The Library has recently signed a Transformative Agreement (TA) with Springer Nature, enabling PolyU authors to publish open access articles with a full waiver of APC. As part of this agreement, a limited quota of APC waivers is offered by Springer Nature for each year on a first-come-first-served basis. This seminar will provide you with valuable insights into this agreement and guide you through the process of submitting your publications to take advantage of this waiver.

All postgraduate students and researchers are welcome!

Mimmi Mononen
Associate Editor, PHD, Springer Nature, China

Mimmi joined Nature Communications in September 2022. She received her PhD from Karolinska Institutet, where she studied early human heart development using single-cell RNA sequencing. She continued using single-cell technologies during her postdoc at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where she worked on cancer stem cells. Mimmi handles manuscripts relating to single-cell biology. She is based in the Hong Kong office.
