Essay Contest

How did a science fiction story change your life?

Were you moved by reading one of the stories from Ted Chiang’s Exhalation... a short sci fi story by another author... or a full-length science fiction novel?

Tell us how reading a particular science fiction story changed your life… or your thinking. Share your lessons, truths, and musings in a way your readers can relate to!

Essay Contest 2020

Length: 500 words (+/- 50 words)
Format: Reflective essay in MS Word
Eligibility: All PolyU students
Deadline: 31 January 2021

In your reflection, include the title of the story (e.g. “The Life Cycle of Objects”) or the novel (e.g. Exhalation) you are writing about, as well as the name of the author (e.g. Ted Chiang).

Email your submissions to library.read.program@polyu.edu.hk.

If you have already submitted and wish to enhance your submission, we would be happy to accept a revised version from you before the new deadline. Otherwise, we will keep your current submission.

Prizes:

  • First: Apple iPad 32 GB
  • Second: Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Tablet
  • Third: $500 Eslite coupon

Winners will have the chance to publish in Inscribe: The Journal of Undergraduate Student Writing.

Resumption of access to JULAC Library Card holders from 4 Jan 2021

Valid JULAC Library Card holders may access the PolyU Library from 4 Jan 2021.

To enter the PolyU campus, JULAC Library Card holders are required to present their valid JULAC Library Card and ID card or other proof of identity, and sign the University’s travel and health status declaration form at the registration counter at any of the following campus entrances on their first visit:

  • Entrance at Podium Level (via public footbridge from Exit A of MTR Hung Hom station)
  • Entrance at the Fountain Square near Core A

* As informed by the University’s Facilities Management Office, Library card holders will be required to submit the declaration again when their card is renewed or replaced, or if there are any subsequent changes in their travel and/or health status, or upon University management’s latest instruction.

Please note that all users must be wearing a mask to be allowed entry into the campus and the Library. To protect oneself and others, all Library users are reminded to

  • Wear a mask properly at all times;
  • Observe the Library Food & Drink Policy. Put the mask back on as soon as possible after drinking. Do not consume any drinks when walking. 
  • Keep a safe social distance with others and not to move the tables and chairs away from their original places.

Effective 4 Jan 2021, the Library will resume its Term Time Opening Hours as follows:

Mondays to Saturdays:  8:30am – 10:00pm 
Sundays: 12:00noon – 9:00pm

READ@PolyU: Nominate a Common Book for 2021 & Get Entered into a Lucky Draw!

READ@PolyU 2021

What book do you think the PolyU community should read next? Send us your Common Book nominations for a new year of reading in 2021.

Submit your favourite book titles, along with the author’s name, to lbread@polyu.edu.hk  by 31 December 2020 (Thursday). There is no limit to the number of book titles you can submit.

To encourage participation, PolyU students and staff who submit a nomination will be automatically enrolled in a lucky draw. Winners will receive a copy of the selected Common Book, and will be notified by email in Spring 2021.

READ@PolyU is the community reading project of PolyU. Our vision is to build an empathetic, creative, and courageous community of learners for whom reading is a source of knowledge and creativity. Each year, we select one book and invite the whole campus to read along.

The Programme Committee reviews all nominations before making the final selection.

What we look for in a common book:

  • The book will be in English, preferably less than 300 pages
  • It should be engaging for the PolyU community (both Faculty and students)
  • It should be accessible, not difficult to read
  • It should appeal to students’ imagination, and should include some elements of exploration of and reflection on multi-cultural issues
  • It should preferably have been adapted for film
  • It should preferably have won international and critical acclaim
  • It should preferably have an electronic version
  • Ideally, the author would be available to visit PolyU

Sample titles suggested by staff and students:

  • Speak / Laurie Halse Anderson
  • Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda / Becky Albertalli
  • Artemis Fowl / Eoin Colfer
  • The Giver / Lois Lowry
  • Persepolis / Marjane Satrapi

Library Introduces More Self-check Services

The Library will implement the following arrangements to streamline the overall loan and return services and enhance user experience:
  • New Self-Service Kiosk on 3/F for Digital Equipment
    The Library has set up a new self-service kiosk for digital equipment in the Multimedia Commons on 3/F. PolyU/CPCE students and staff can check out/in AV accessories such as headphones and drawing tablets there. Please visit here for more details.
 
  • Relocation of Self-checkout station from 3/F to P/F
    With effect from 4 January 2021, users can borrow and return both books and audio-visual (AV) items at the Loan and Return Counter on Library Podium Floor. The Multimedia Commons Counter on 3/F will close on the said date accordingly. Users can still access the AV collections in their existing locations in Multimedia Commons on 3/F.  To enable users to conveniently check out AV items and books before they leave the Library, a self-checkout station will be relocated from Multimedia Commons (3/F) to Podium Floor.

Access by JULAC Library Card holders – update

Due to the resurgence of coronavirus infections in the community, access to PolyU Library for JULAC Library Card holders will continue to be suspended until further notice. During this period, students and staff from other JULAC institutions can still access our books using the HKALL service. The Library will review and update on this temporary arrangement again in end December.  We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
