Enrich Online Teaching with Open Educational Resources (OERs)

Have you included any up-to-date and relevant Open Educational Resources (OERs) in your online teaching to enrich students’ learning experience?

 

PolyU OER Portal (http://oer.lib.polyu.edu.hk) features hundreds of quality and up-to-date discipline-specific teaching materials, activities, and learning exercises that are hand-picked by faculty librarians from internationally renowned and creditable sources. Resources on our portal are organized under eight PolyU disciplines (and GEC) for easy discovery. You can also explore OERs by subject disciplinecourse code, keywords, and resource types so that relevant resources could be located and embedded into Course Resource List (quick guide here) swiftly.

 

PolyU Open Educational Resources Portal is a service from the Pao Yue-kong Library to facilitate the PolyU community to discover, integrate and share quality open-licensed teaching and learning resources that reside in the public domain. You can also explore the Library's collection of OER portals around the world for further inspirations!

 

Embed OERs in your Resource List and let your students seamlessly connect to teaching materials directly from Learn@PolyU.

Use Resource List to improve quality of online teaching

To facilitate online teaching and learning, instructors can make use of Library’s Resource List to seamlessly connect your students to lists of mandatory and supplementary teaching resources directly from Learn@PolyU.

  • Resource List is a platform that lets Instructors personally manage suggested readings and other resources, such as e-books and e-journals and Open Educational Resources (OERs) so as to better support online teaching and student’s learning. 
  • The Library’s OER portal pulls together open-licensed teaching and learning resources that reside in the public domain so that PolyU Instructors can discover and share them to supplement their teaching.

 

How to add supplementary materials and Open Educational Resources into your Resource List?

 

Instructors can easily add mandatory and additional teaching materials, including relevant Open Educational Resources (OERs) into the Resource List of their courses.

Improve your Research Visibility and Impact in 2020

Increasing the visibility of researcher profiles and research works has become an essential skill for early career researchers. Take this chance to learn more about the latest developments on author profiles and research impact to boost your research visibility in the scholarly community.

Here are some useful updates to author profiles in Web of Science, ORCID, journal impact factor and open access.

  • Author profile in Web of Science [New]

    Web of Science has recently made available an Author Record page for authors to easily maintain their publications in Web of Science Core Collection thus allowing more accurate citation metrics. As an author, you can claim the ownership of your Author Record and sync the publications to Publons to make them more visible. Learn more through our guide Web of Science Author Record.
  • ORCID profile

    Have you added your latest publications to ORCID? ORCID now also allows adding works by DOI and PubMed ID. Making sure that your publication list in your ORCID is up to date will allow others to read your new works. Revisit the ways of adding works to ORCID or create a new ORCID account if you do not have one yet.
  • Journal Impact

    Publishing in known journals in a subject field makes your publications more visible to the right audience and journal Impact Factor (IF) is one established metric to identify known journals in a research area. The 2018 journal Impact Factor has been released in this June. Check the latest IF for your favourite journals via Journal Citation Reports and learn more about journal metrics on different platforms.
  • Open Access

    In 2018, 19% of publications by PolyU authors were published in Open Access (OA) journals*. Making your publications open access increases the visibility of your works. As an author you may come across questions like how to identify “good” OA journals and how to deal with the licensing issues. Learn more about publishing in OA journals and Creative Commons licenses.

The Library Project Wins Two QS Reimagine Education Awards 2020

The project “i-Space: A Makerspace and Community for Students of All Backgrounds at the University Library” launched by the Library of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has won the Regional Silver Award in Asia-Pacific and Cultivating Curiosity Bronze Award of the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2020.

The PolyU Library built and opened the new i-Space in 2017. The i-Space is an experimental learning space zoned for inspiration, ideation and implementation. It is an educational innovation, the first of its kind among academic libraries in Hong Kong. To promote the equality of opportunity for students to access digital equipment, the Library offers a new facility Digital Makerspace in i-Space to provide a low barrier of entry for students of all disciplines and family background to try out and explore entry-level digital equipment such as Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality (VR), 3D scanning & printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, poster printing, videos recording and editing.

With a view to cultivating curiosity and Can-do Mindset, MakerMindset@i-Space Programme was launched in 2018 with the sponsorship from Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund. The Programme enriches students’ learning experience through creative and insightful hands-on workshops and seminars, encourages students to explore inspirational use of emerging technologies in creative work.

The PolyU Library’s Digital Makerspace embraces Culture Tech concept by bringing culture, technology and interdisciplinary collaboration together. In facilitating knowledge transfer to the community, the PolyU Library and Department of Electronic and Information Engineering co-organized the “Inter-secondary School Virtual Reality Contest” with the theme "Stories from Ancient China". The Contest challenged secondary students from diverse disciplines to turn stories and fables from ancient China into immersive Virtual Reality games.

QS Reimagine Education Awards 2020

The international Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Reimagine Education Awards are designed to reward the most successful educational innovations, enhancing student learning outcomes and employability. Over 1500 educators from across the world contested this year’s Awards. Over 250 educators from across the world submitted judging candidacies, from which 194 of the most authoritative and experienced were selected.

Resource List: Understanding Students’ Engagement

As the semester draws to a close, we can make use of analytics and data from the Resource List platform to better understand how our students are making use of the reading lists for your courses.

Resource List, a tool launched in July 2019, aims to connect your students with your course readings right inside Learn@PolyU. This platform allows Instructors and Librarians to collaborate and manage suggested readings and other resources to support students’ learning.

Log on to Learn@PolyU, access the Resource List platform and see usage analytics under “Reports” in the left sidebar. Here are some useful usage analytics you can use to better understand how your reading lists are used:

  • Total number of Active Students
  • Total number of Full Text Access
  • Total number of Likes

These analytics can be exported into an Excel spreadsheet for further analysis.

Reminder for Returning or Renewing Term Loans

This message is a gentle reminder to all academic, administrative equivalent staff and postgraduate students that all library books on loan to them are due on 20 January 2020. Please return the books to Library when it reopens. The reopening date will be announced in due course. In case you will not return to campus in the first two weeks of Semester 2 which will commence on 13 January 2020, you are recommended to renew your loans first and return the books not in need any more to Library later.

 

Books borrowed or renewed from now on will be due for return on 25 May 2020.

 

A loan may be recalled once the item has been on loan to you for four weeks if required by another user. Notice of “Shortened due date / No further renewal of your Library items(s)” will be emailed to you. Please remember to check your PolyU or CPCE official email account regularly, including the Clutter and Junk Email folders.

 

Please return all loans before leaving Hong Kong on long leave so that other users can have access to the books. To view your borrowing record or to renew your loans online, please visit https://www.lib.polyu.edu.hk/my-record.
