About the Talk

This webinar links Ted Chiang's collection of short stories Exhalation to important current issues and famous questions about the meaning of our lives and how we treat others. By participating you will discover the real-life scientific and philosophical questions that Chiang's stories seek to provide answers for. We will talk about time travel, self-understanding, fate, robots, intelligence, artificial intelligence, and more.

About the Speaker

Dr Andrew Morrall is a Senior Teaching Fellow of the English Language Centre (ELC). He has been working at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University since 1995. His experience has been as an English language teacher, a university lecturer, and the subject leader of the popular CAR courses - ELC1A01 Science Fiction as a Reflection on Humanity and ELC1A04 From Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter: Fantasy, Reality and Humanity.

[Exhibition] Knit Your Emotion

Presented by the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC), a new exhibition "Knit Your Emotion" will be held on the Library Podium Floor from 12 to 30 Oct 2020. Through the exhibits and short video, the exhibition reveals how knitting can help people to relieve stress and get rid of negative mood. Do visit the Library and have a glimpse of some inspiring knitted creations by ITC students and graduates to understand more about the uplifting benefits of knitting.

The back staircase from 1/F to 3/F will be temporarily closed for renovation works from 1 to 30 Oct 2020. Please use the front staircase or elevators for accessing other floors if needed. 

Construction works for plant room extension will be carried out near the back staircase on 1/F from 5 to 31 Oct 2020. Please excuse the noise and disruption during the works period.

講座概要

美籍華裔作家姜峯楠(Ted Chiang)是極少數沒有寫過一本長篇小說而成名的科幻小說作家。他的短篇和中篇小說產量也不多。從1990至2001創作的,收錄在2002年出版的故事集《Story of Your Life and Others》,而從2005至2019創作的,則收錄在2019年出版的《Exhalation》之中。然而,兩本作品集皆獲得極高的評價,頭一本小說的主題故事,更於2016年改編拍成科幻大電影 《Arrival》。一些評論者更認為他的成就將可媲美著名作家,如愛倫坡(Edgar Allan Poe)、波赫斯(Jorge Luis Borges)甚至卡夫卡(Franz Kafka)等。

究竟姜峯楠的故事有什麼魅力?他的著作與一般的科幻小說有什麼分別?他的寫作特色和思想內涵又有什麼值得我們注意和欣賞的地方?在這次講座裡,香港著名科幻推手李偉才博士,將環繞著READ@PolyU年度小說《Exhalation》之中的故事,逐一回答上述的問題,從而帶大家進入科幻與哲思的奇妙世界。

講者簡介

李偉才博士,香港著名科普作家,曾任香港科幻會會長。早年於香港大學物理系以一級榮譽學位畢業,及後在澳洲新南威爾斯大學修畢博士學位。歷任太空館助理館長、天文台高級科學主任、澳洲悉尼大學兼職講師、港大附屬學院協理副校長及國際學位課程中心總監等職。因致力推動普及科學,於1985年獲選為香港十大傑出青年。至今發表著作超過四十本,其中《資本的衝動》於2015年被《亞洲周刊》選為「十大中文好書」、而《論盡宇宙》和《論盡科學》則榮獲2019年度的「香港出版雙年獎」。

Launching of Online Printing Submission System

The Library is pleased to announce the launch of its new Online Printing Submission System (OPSS).  From now on, PolyU students and staff have to submit their print requests of large-format poster through the OPSS. The print charge will be calculated immediately after selecting the preferred printing parameters such as page size, paper type and media.  When the printout is completed, you can collect the printed document and settle the payment at the Technical Support Desk in i-Space, 4/F North Wing.
