PROFILE

  • Obituary

It is with great sorrow to share the news that our Founding Librarian Mr Barry Burton passed away in Australia on 6 April 2012. He was 70.

Born and educated in England, Barry was appointed the Founding Librarian of the then Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1973. Under his leadership and guidance, the Library has grown from a small beginning to being a world-class Library. He has led us through all the changes and difficulties before he retired in April 2007. He was awarded the University Fellowship in the same year as a tribute to his significant contributions to the University.

Barry is survived by his three children, Jodi, Nigel and Simon and three grandchildren. A wake for Barry was held in Australia on 14 April and a wake in Hong Kong will be arranged in mid May 2012. According to his family, "Barry has expressed one of his final wishes was for his friends and family to drink from his cellar and celebrate his life."

    We'll all miss you, Barry.
