How much do you know about our Scenario Planning?

Why Scenario Planning?
To meet the teaching, research and learning needs of our users with respect to the rapid growth and advancement in information technology.
   
To prepare for the growth of student population as a result of the "3-3-4 Curriculum Reform".
   
To position the Library to cater to students' changing learning patterns.
 

How is it done
Formation of Scenario Planning Working Group (16 July 2007)

Focus User Group Meetings (August - October 2007)
A total of 9 sessions were arranged.
   
More than 200 participants, including the Academics, Researchers, Undergraduate & Postgraduate students and Library staff participated in discussions.
   
Over 900 valuable inputs and opinions on library service, and resources were collected.
 
 
 
 
 
 
   
Scenario Planning Construction Workshop (18 October 2007)
       
 
The workshop was well attended by 24 senior academic and research staff, including two Vice-Presidents, Assistant Vice-President, Faculty Deans, Department Heads and Library Representatives from the Students' Union.
   
Following the above meetings and consultation, Mr. Steve O'Connor, our University Librarian has initiated the Preferred Scenario - "The LEARNING HUB".

Users' responses to "The LEARNING HUB"
Faculty & Department Consultation (November 2007 - January 2008)
     
   

The overall response of the participants towards "The LEARNING HUB" has been good and positive. Their major concerns are:

library space planning
remote access to library resources
AV materials
software application on Library's computers

 
     
Web Survey (November 2007 - January 2008)
   
In order to collect users' views on the Preferred Library Scenario, a web survey was posted on library's homepage.

  Faculty of Health and Social Sciences 14%
  Faculty of Construction and Land Use 11%
  School of Hotel and Tourism 9%
  Administrative, Support Services and Other Units 9%
  Faculty of Communication 3%
  Faculty of Engineering 3%
  School of Design 3%
   
The survey showed most of the respondents were supportive to the Preferred Scenario. 53% of the respondents perceived that the Future Library Scenario was “Very desirable”, and 43% regarded it as “Somewhat desirable".
         
   
Among the respondents, 71% and 16% were undergraduate students and postgraduate students respectively; the remaining belonged to administrative and research staff.
     
 


Making it REAL
In order to decide on the actions to give effect to the Preferred Library Scenario, the Library held its Departmental Retreat off campus on 9 January 2008.
   

Over 30 library professional and support staff participated in the Retreat to discuss the strategic plan on topics like library physical space and collection, etc.
   
The development of the strategic plan will pave the way for the library to achieve the Preferred Library Scenario by 2011.

We would like to express our appreciation to the faculty members, students and library staff who participated in the focus groups, construction workshop and consultation meetings in the previous months. Thanks are also due to the respondents to the web survey.


Increase in the HKALL Renewal Limit

Starting January 2nd, 2008, all HKALL loans can be renewed twice if the item is not requested by another user. For the details of HKALL service, please see http://www.lib.polyu.edu.hk/services/hkall.


New Arrangement for the 24-hour Study Centre
Service commencing 14 January 2008

Effective 14 January 2008, the 24-hour Study Centre is divided into two zones during Library closing hours.
Security Guard will patrol the 24-hour Study Centre at intervals and noisy users in the Quiet Study Zone may be vacated.
   
Users are reminded that making noise in the Library is a library offence. Repeated offenders will be liable to further disciplinary action.

BioMed Central Membership at PolyU
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has become a BioMed Central member since 1 January 2008. All Academic staff will be able to reap all the benefits of publishing your research article in an open access journal without paying the article processing charge. This is true regardless of the number of papers you publish.

BioMed Central (BMC) publishes over 180 online journals, across the whole spectrum of biology and medicine. It is worth noting that 58 of these BMC journals have ISI impact factors while another 35 have unofficial impact factors after undergoing vigorous scrutiny.
